The local economy in Chicago is expected to continue to strengthen, as well. Currently, the unemployment rate is 4.3 percent, just a bit higher than the nation at 4.1 percent.

Largest Employers in Chicago

A few of the larger employers currently in the Chicago area are AT&T, Abbot Laboratories and Advocate Health Care. All three of these businesses are in very different industries, offering a wide variety of available employment options to job seekers.

AT&T offers many positions in sales, in retail and cashiering, as technicians, and in office and administration. Many of these have entry-level roles that often lead up to managerial positions with appropriate experience and education.

Abbot Laboratories employ chemists and technicians, pharmaceutical specialists, sales, and office and administration staff. Abbot has far fewer entry-level jobs but has many opportunities for an experienced individual with a four-year degree.

Advocate Health Care employs nurses, surgeons, technicians, customer service and office and administration jobs. Office and administration jobs include positions in accounting, finance, management, clerical and customer service.

The healthcare industry is growing by leaps and bounds throughout the nation, and Chicago is no different.

The largest industries in Chicago, offering the most available jobs, include financial services, telecommunications, and infrastructure. Chicago-OHare Airport, being the second busiest airport in the countrya multitude of employment opportunities and has played a major role in the expansion of the telecommunications and infrastructure industries. This transportation hub ensures easy access, and many employers have chosen the area due to the strong financial industry within it. Many industry-leading companies such as Allstate, JP Morgan, and Nationwide Insurance have corporate offices here. Employment opportunities are usually plentiful within these firms.

Tech is also a major contributor to the Chicago economy. Growth of 15 percent between 2016 and 2017 meant that there were 47,600 people involved in the top 100 tech firms in 2017, compared to 25,000 people just four years earlier.
